In the late 1970s an idea was born out of a sales person's frustration from working with multiple maps, phone books and sales directory lists to better improve his sales prospecting. The original PinPointer was called the “Redliner”. It was a book of map pages with red dots placed where various manufacturing companies were located and red lines drawn from those dots to the edge of the page where the company information was listed. These original "Redliners" covered selected areas in Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky. In the early 1990s the name Redliner was changed to PinPointer. At about the same time the editorial process for creating a PinPointer was improved with the introduction of GIS (Geographic Information System) technology, making the locating of companies more accurate and efficient. This allowed PinPointer books to be updated more frequently as the pace of economic change accelerated. As word about this unique product spread, the areas covered by PinPointers were expanded, and many Chambers of Commerce around the country started contracting to have custom PinPointers published for their areas. In the summer of 2000 TechniGraphics, Inc. purchased PinPointer and immediately began developing an electronic version. It is this product that we sell today. This development took almost two years from the idea stage to the first release to a customer. Q. How do I install PinPointer®?
A. To install PinPointer® begin by inserting the CD into your CD-ROM drive. Then click on the "Start" menu and select "Run". In the "Run" window type in D:\setup.exe where D is the letter of your CD-ROM drive and press "OK". The install program should now begin. Follow the wizard's setup instructions to finish installing.
* If you are installing PinPointer® on a machine with Windows NT, 2000, or XP you need to be logged on as Administrator or any user with administrative rights to install properly.
** Industrial PinPointer software is compatible with Windows Vista and Windows 7 if run as administrator.
Q. If I get Error 339 when starting PinPointer®, how do I proceed?
A. Error 339 can be corrected by starting PinPointer® while logged in as Administrator, logged in as a user with administrative rights, or by using the 'run as administrator' option after right-clicking on the PinPointer® start icon. This will only need to be done once: After the first time PinPointer® has been started in this fashion it can be started by double-clicking the start icon.

Q. Why do I get an error message when I install PinPointer®?
A. While installing PinPointer a Fatal Setup Error occurs with
the following error:
Microsoft Data Access Components 2.5 is already
installed on the version of Windows you are running. Setup cannot
update the system. For more information about updating Microsoft
Data Access Components 2.5 on your system, see the download page
related to this release of Microsoft Data Access Components 2.5
on the web page http://www.microsoft.com/data.
This error is standard in installations on machines running Windows
ME, NT, 2000, or XP. These versions of Windows come with the MDAC
2.5 already installed on the machine so the error occurs saying
that the component is already installed. This error does not affect
the installation and PinPointer® will
still run properly.
Q. Why does the screen cut off the program's buttons and menu?
A. To fix this problem go to your display properties. This can accomplished by opening up your Control Panel and then opening Display. Once the Display window opens up click on the Settings Tab at the top of the screen. Now look on that page for Screen Resolution. Make sure that the screen resolution is set to a minimum of 800x600. If your's is set to 640x480 then change it to 800x600 or higher and then click the OK button at the bottom of the window to apply your change. This should fix your problem and you should now be able to see the entire program.

Q. How do I print a single firm's Company Information?
A. While in the map view or search criteria view you can print a single firm's company information or a mailing label by simply right-clicking your mouse on the name of the company you want to print. A little menu will popup giving you the choice to print the Company Information or a Mailing Label.
Q. How do I export the data from Industrial PinPointer®?
A. To use the data in ACT! or Goldmine we first need to export the PinPointer® data to Excel. From the Search Criteria Screen click on “Save to Excel” Save the exported data in the folder of your choosing. Give it an easy to remember name. Now your data is saved in an Excel file.

Q. Can I add my own companies to PinPointer®?
A. PinPointer® does not allow you to add your own companies. PinPointer is created with advanced programs that allow us to plot each company location by hand to ensure its correct location and the validity of the data.
Q. Where can I buy the PinPointer® books?
A. We no longer make or sell the PinPointer® books. The electronic version of PinPointer allows us to provide you with many additional features that we could not provide you through the books. Such features include: customized searching and sorting, printing mailing labels, and generation of customized maps.
